The Morning the Jacket Comes Off the Hook

The Morning the Jacket Comes Off the Hook

There is one morning every August when the air turns.

Nothing on the calendar says so. The light comes in lower. It goes gold an hour earlier in the evening. I swim at five, and one morning the walk back up is cold on my arms.

That is the morning. The jacket comes off the hook. It has hung there since June and it has been bored.

One layer and no more

Late summer wants one layer. You put it on at six and you carry it over your arm by two.

Denim does that better than anything. It cuts the chill and it never makes you warm. It goes over almost everything you own. It gets better every mile.

The white tee goes underneath. That is the outfit. Some mornings I think about improving on it and then I do not.

How it layers

The pattern does two jobs. It sits close over a tee. It opens up for a flannel once the mornings get serious.

One shape, both jobs. That took years, and it is why the same jacket works in August and again in November.

The denim is sanforized. The mill stretches it, fixes it and shrinks it in length before anyone cuts a pattern from it. So it fits the first morning, and it stays the size you picked.

What is in it

The denim is fourteen ounce selvedge, rope dyed, made for us in Japan. The cuffs are ours. The stitching runs triple-needle throughout and the thread is bright gold, so you can see the work from across a room.

There is a diamond back stitch on the collar and our own YKK donut button at the throat. The Quality Outdoor Clothing label is sewn inside. The whole jacket is made in Japan.

It is a stocked design. Order it Monday and wear it Friday.

What comes after

The jacket takes you to October. Then the tweed comes out.

That cloth is woven by hand by islanders in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, in their own homes. The wool is dyed there, spun there and finished there. It is woven for us in small runs. The GOLDEN chore coat carries the diamond quilting made for us in Japan through the sleeves.

There is a good stretch coming. The closet wakes up one piece at a time.

Twenty Augusts

A jacket that meets you at the turn of the season is worth owning once.

It is worth more the twentieth time. The same hook. The same cold morning. More of your life on the sleeves.

That is the jacket I wanted, and that is the jacket this is.

Your turn

What do you reach for when the weather turns? Hit reply and tell me. I read every one, and they are the best mail I get.

Have a nice day. I mean that.
