What Fashion Design Really Is When You Do It Right
I design Black Bear Brand so I can have something I can have, love, wear, and the beauty is a byproduct of getting the hard parts right.
Real design is problem solving. It is answering a hundred quiet questions about how a garment should live, move, wear, and age, long before anyone thinks about how it looks on a hanger. My whole philosophy starts with one rule, form follows function. A garment has to work before it earns the right to be beautiful. The rugged is the function. The refined is what happens when you obsess over every detail on top of it.
Designed against the landfill
Roughly one hundred billion garments are produced every year, and around ninety two million tonnes of textiles are thrown away annually. The average garment today is worn a fraction as often as it was a generation ago, and much of it is discarded within a year of being sold. I build the exact opposite, pieces meant to last decades and be handed down, so owning less and owning better is actually possible.
The process is slow on purpose
It starts with a problem, then the search for the right material, because the material dictates everything. Selvedge from Okayama. Leather from Horween. Corduroy crafted in Japan. Then pattern, prototype, and fit, over and over. Our ONE jacket took years before I would let it exist. That is not inefficiency, that is the work.
Honor the maker
Our denim is cut and sewn in an Okayama room family run for five generations. Every year, three special tweeds are woven by hand for us in Scotland, and I make three jackets from them, no more. If you want my philosophy in one garment, look at the BORO jacket, built on the old Japanese tradition of mending indigo cloth until the repairs themselves become the beauty. The most beautiful things are built slowly, used hard, and made to carry a story.
