Midnight Glen, Wildflower, Moss Fire

Every year three new Harris Tweeds are woven for us in Scotland, and I make three jackets from them. That is the arrangement and it has been that way for a while now.

This year's three are coming this fall. I have been waiting on them since spring.

What Harris Tweed actually is

It is protected by law, and the law is specific. The wool has to be pure virgin wool. It has to be dyed and spun in the Outer Hebrides. And it has to be woven by hand, in the weaver's own home.

Not in a mill. In their house, on their own loom.

That is not a story somebody wrote for a hangtag. It is why Harris Tweed cannot be made anywhere else on earth, and it is why I keep going back.

Ours is woven for Black Bear Brand in limited production. These cloths are ours and nobody else gets them.

The three

First out is the Midnight Glen Tartan, as a western jacket.

Then the Wildflower Tartan, as a chore coat.

Then in December, the Moss Fire Tartan, as a zip coat.

Three tweeds, three shapes, one each. That is all there is of them.

Then they come to Seattle

The cloth crosses an ocean and the jackets are made here in Seattle.

Scottish wool on the outside, an American design holding it together, and on some of them Japanese diamond quilting inside. Three countries in one coat, and every part of it is there because that is where the work is best.

What is still here

There are limited pieces left from the tweeds before these. The Psychedelic Blue Tartan western jacket, with the diamond quilt lining. The Golden Tartan chore coat. The Highlander. The Ranch Coat.

When a tweed runs out that is the end of it. The next year brings different cloth, and the old one does not come back.
