The Color That Killed People
Green was the hardest color in the world to make, and then it was the deadliest.
Every color has a price. Green has the highest one in the history of cloth.
Two Baths
Before 1775 there was no single green dye worth having. You dyed the cloth yellow first, from weld or turmeric, then over dyed it with woad or indigo. Two processes. Two chances to get it wrong. The shade moved from lot to lot.
Green cloth was expensive and unreliable, so a green coat said money out loud.
The Chemist
In 1775 a Swedish chemist named Carl Wilhelm Scheele made a brilliant green out of copper and arsenic. One bath. One color. It held.
In 1814 a deeper emerald followed, called Paris green, and it lasted longer than Scheele's did. Europe went green. Wallpaper, paint, candles, food coloring, children's toys, ball gowns.
What It Cost
In 1859 a French physician walked through a Paris workshop where women made artificial flowers. He found the green dust packed under their fingernails, around their cuticles, up their arms. They were being poisoned by the leaves they were making.
A survey in the 1890s found that around a fifth of dress fabrics carried more than three milligrams of arsenic per meter of cloth. Queen Victoria had the green wallpaper stripped out of Buckingham Palace after a visiting dignitary was made ill by a room.
It stayed in use for decades after the warnings started. Nobody could prove which poison in a Victorian house was doing the killing.
What It Taught
Color has never been free. It costs chemistry, time, and somebody's full attention. When a color arrives cheap and instant, something got skipped.
Our Green
Old Money Green is ours. The color was created here and it exists nowhere else. The corduroy is woven for us in Japan, then every pair is finished in our own garment wash, which is where the depth and the movement come from.
The same green runs through the 30oz terry, garment dyed here in the States.
It took a long time to get right. That is the point of it.
