Wildflower: The Harris Tweed Chore Coat, His and Hers
One cloth from the islands. Two coats from Seattle. One of them is the first Black Bear Brand Harris Tweed coat made for a woman.
Two coats, one cloth
I have wanted to make this coat for years. Now it is here, twice.
The Wildflower is one of the three new Harris Tweeds woven for Black Bear Brand this year. It became two chore coats. The WILDFLOWER Harris Tweed Chore Coat is his. The WOMAN WILDFLOWER Harris Tweed Chore Coat is hers, and it is the first Black Bear Brand Harris Tweed coat ever made for women.
Both are cut from the same Wildflower tweed. Both are made in Seattle.
Where the cloth comes from
Harris Tweed is woven by islanders at their homes in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. The wool is pure virgin wool, dyed and spun on the islands, and the cloth is finished there too. The Wildflower was produced by hand in Scotland for Black Bear Brand.
The islands are famous for something else. Along their western shores runs machair, a low coastal grassland of shell rich sand that has been grazed and crofted for more than a thousand years. Scotland and Ireland are the only two countries in the world that have it, and most of Scotland's lies in the Outer Hebrides, Tiree and Coll. Through the summer it is covered in swathes of wildflowers that change color as the season goes on.
The name fits the place.
What the two coats share
His and hers share everything that makes them Black Bear Brand chore coats. Each is lined in diamond quilting made for Black Bear Brand in Japan, in black satin suede. Each has special Black Bear Brand cuffs. Each is stitched double needle throughout and closes with the Black Bear Brand YKK donut button and Black Bear Brand YKK snaps.
Where they differ
Hers is its own design, cut for a woman. Inside the neck sits the Black Bear Brand WOMAN tag. It comes in Small through X-Large.
His carries the COMMANDER tag at the inner neck and a diamond back stitch on the collar. It comes in X-Small through XXX-Large. In the photographs I am wearing a Large, the size I wear in all Black Bear Brand jackets.

His and hers at Black Bear Brand
The first his and hers collection at Black Bear Brand was in leather, the Aged IVORY Rough-Out Chore Coat and the WOMAN IVORY Rough-Out Chore Coat in Horween horsehide. The Wildflower brings his and hers into Harris Tweed.
Two people in the same cloth, each in a coat made for them, is a good way to walk into winter. It is also one of the finest gifts two people can give each other.
Limited by the cloth
All Black Bear Brand Harris Tweed is hand woven for the brand in limited production. Three new tweeds come each year. This fall it is the Midnight Glen tartan as a western jacket, the Wildflower as these two chore coats and, in December, the Moss Fire tartan as a zip coat.
