Finding Your Size at Black Bear Brand

Finding Your Size at Black Bear Brand

Every design is cut for its own purpose. The size guide for each one tells you exactly how it fits.

Every design has its own fit

A peacoat and a western jacket are different coats. A cowboy jean and a double front jean are different jeans. Each Black Bear Brand design is cut for what it is meant to be, so each design has its own measurements.

That is why every design has its own measurement and size guide. You will find a link to it toward the top of each product page, and a copy of it sits in with the photographs.

The guide is the most accurate answer we can give you. It is the garment itself, measured.

Measure what you already love

The surest way to find your size is to start with a piece you already own and like the fit of. Pick one that is close to the design you are looking at. A jacket for a jacket. A pair of jeans for a pair of jeans.

Lay it flat on a table and smooth it out. Then measure it the same way the size guide does.

For a jacket or a shirt, measure across the chest from armpit to armpit. Measure the shoulders from seam to seam. Measure the sleeve from the shoulder seam to the end of the cuff, and the length from the base of the collar to the hem.

For jeans and pants, measure the waist straight across the top of the waistband. Measure the rise from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband. Measure across the thigh just below the crotch, across the leg opening, and the inseam from the crotch seam to the hem.

Now put your numbers next to ours. The size whose numbers sit closest to the piece you love is the one to look at first.

What I wear in the photos

Most of the men's photographs on the site are of me. I am around 200 pounds and 5'11", and I wear a Large in Black Bear Brand jackets. You can see it in the WILDFLOWER Harris Tweed Chore Coat, the Black Bear Brand Peacoat and the Heavy Stone Grey Melton Wool Western Over-Shirt.

In jeans I wear a 34 waist, and that is what you see in the Double Front Jeans and the Indigo Cowboy Jeans. In the Vintage BLACK BEAR BRAND Ultimate Jeans I go up to a 36, because I like that pair looser.

Each product page says which size is in its photographs, so you always know what you are looking at. A few designs are cut closer on purpose. The Ultimate 30oz Terry Hoody is one of them. Its page says plainly that it is not oversized and is more fitted.

The length is long on purpose

The men's jeans and corduroys are made long. The Double Front Jeans and the ONE Jeans are made at about 37 inches in every size. The double front corduroys are made at 34 inches. The cowboy jeans come in a 40 inch cowboy cut.

How a pant sits is personal style. I roll mine. Many men have theirs hemmed. If you hem a pair, have it done in person by a tailor, after the jeans have been washed the way you plan to keep washing them.

Black Bear Brand WOMAN

The WOMAN collection is sized for women, and every WOMAN design has its own size guide too. The WOMAN Boy Friend Washed Jeans come in waists from 24 to 34. The WOMAN Japanese Cotton Thermal Henley and the WOMAN WILDFLOWER Harris Tweed Chore Coat come in Small through X-Large.

The same method works. Lay your favorite piece flat, measure it, and compare it to ours.
