Start with the cloth
Every Black Bear Brand piece begins with the cloth. It is bought from the finest mills and tanneries, then sent to the sewing room where that piece is made best. Here are the fabrics of the cold months, and where each one lives in the collection.
Melton wool
Melton is wool that is woven and then fulled until the fibers lock into a dense, smooth face. It stops wind. The Heavy Stone Grey Melton Wool Western Over-Shirt is 28oz of pure melton wool woven in the USA. The BLACK Melton Western Jacket is 23.5oz. Both are made in Seattle.
Harris Tweed
Harris Tweed is pure virgin wool, dyed and spun in the Outer Hebrides and woven by hand at the weaver's home. The SKY BLUE Tartan Zip Coat is cut from 470 to 500 gram Harris Tweed woven for Black Bear Brand.
Camel hair
Camel hair is light for its warmth and soft against the hand. The Camel Hair Chore Coat is 100% pure camel hair produced in the USA for Black Bear Brand.
Merino
Merino is a fine wool that knits soft and warm. The Cable Knit Fisherman Wool Sweater is Rocky Mountain merino knit in northern Japan.
Corduroy
Corduroy is cotton cut into soft ridges called wales. The Double Front OLD MONEY Green Cords are 8oz corduroy, produced for Black Bear Brand in Japan in a color created for the brand, then finished in the brand's own garment wash, so each pair comes out with its own depth of color.
Selvedge denim
The WINTER Washed Denim Chore Coat is 13.5oz shuttle loom selvedge, lined in Japanese diamond quilting, with a washed corduroy collar.
Waffle knit and heavy terry
A waffle knit traps warm air in its small pockets. The Ultimate Thermal Henley is 11.5oz cotton and modal, made in Seattle. The Ultimate 30oz Terry Hoody is made in the USA and cut and sewn in Seattle.
Horsehide, sheepskin and down
Horween horsehide, long curl lambskin, tight curl sheepskin and silver quality goose down finish the list. The Goose Down Vest is 100% made in Japan with a vegetable tanned hide yoke from Himeji. The leather jackets are made to order in the USA.
