The Down Vest: Warmth Without Weight
Down does not keep you warm. Trapped air does.
What Down Actually Is
Down is not feathers. Feathers have a hard central quill and they lie flat. Down is the soft undercoating that sits beneath them, and it grows as a three dimensional cluster with filaments running in every direction.
Those clusters do not warm you. They hold still air, and still air is one of the best insulators there is. Heat moves slowly across the boundaries between trapped pockets. The more pockets, the slower the loss. That is the entire mechanism.
Which is also why wet down is useless. Saturate it and the clusters collapse, the air goes, and the insulation goes with it. A soaked down piece is a wet shirt with extra weight. Down is a warmth layer, not a rain shell.
Fill Power, Explained Properly
Fill power is a lab measurement. One ounce of down is dropped into a cylinder, a weight is set on top, and after a minute you read the volume it occupies. Eight hundred fill power means one ounce lofted to eight hundred cubic inches.
The working range in good outerwear is roughly six hundred to eight hundred. Eight hundred is generally where the excellent range begins. The ceiling in the world is somewhere around nine hundred and fifty to a thousand.
Higher is not automatically warmer. It is warmer for its weight, and more compressible. A piece with a lot of moderate down can be warmer than a piece with a little superb down. Fill power tells you the quality of the material. Fill weight tells you how much of it is in there. You need both numbers to know anything.
Why Bigger Clusters Come From Older Birds
Cluster size is the whole game, and cluster size comes from maturity. Older birds grow larger, more resilient clusters with longer filaments that interlock into a more stable structure.
Geese are larger than ducks and tend to live in colder conditions, so their clusters run bigger. Below the mid eight hundreds you can find excellent duck down that performs the same as goose. Above that threshold only geese produce clusters large enough to reach the top ratings.
One myth worth killing. Gray and white down insulate identically. White simply requires more sorting to isolate, and it matters only when the shell fabric is pale enough for the fill to show through.
Why a Vest
Three decades in the Pacific Northwest taught me that the vest is the most useful warm piece a man owns.
It insulates the core, which is what the body is trying to protect anyway, and it leaves the arms free. It goes under a jacket without turning you into luggage. It goes over a flannel and under a chore coat in November. It works on a bike, where a big sleeve is a liability. It packs down to nothing in a bag. Nine months of the year in this part of the world, a vest is the correct answer and a parka is an overreaction.
The One We Built
I wanted a down vest at the level of everything else we make, and that meant Japan.
The shell is a 4.8 ounce nylon ripstop with a water repellent finish, made in Japan. The lining is a 3.6 ounce Taslan nylon, also made in Japan. The fill is silver quality goose down, the highest grade we could put our hands on. The shoulder yoke is indigo dyed steer hide produced in Himeji, which is a leather town the way Okayama is a denim town. It closes with a vintage Talon two way zipper and our own snaps.
That yoke is the part people touch first. It is the part that makes it ours. It also does a job, taking the abrasion at the shoulder where a bag strap or a seat back kills a nylon shell.
Buy the vest that does not have to be replaced. Then wear it for twenty winters.
