Seven Colors of 30oz Terry
There are three places you can put color into a garment. The last one is the most beautiful.
Three places to put color
You can dye the yarn before anything is knit or woven. That is yarn dyeing, and it is how you get a stripe or a plaid, because the pattern is in the threads themselves.
You can dye the finished cloth on a roll. That is piece dyeing, and it gives you a flat, even, dependable color across the whole length.
Or you can sew the garment first, in undyed cloth, and dye the whole finished thing at the end. That is garment dyeing. It is slower, it costs more, and it is the one I keep coming back to.
What garment dyeing does
When you drop a finished sweatshirt in the dye bath, everything in it goes in at once. The body, the ribbing, the thread in every seam, the drawcord. They are not all the same material, and they do not all take dye at the same rate.
So the seams come out a hair different from the body. The ribbing sits a shade off the panels. Where the cloth is doubled, the color deepens. What you get is not a flat color. It is a color with depth in it, alive across the surface, the way a good piece looks after you have already loved it for a year. It arrives that way.
Then it keeps going. Garment dyed color moves as you wear it. Elbows, cuffs, the front of the thighs. It goes where your life goes.
Seven colors
There are seven. Charcoal Grey. Old Money Green. Hunter Green. Navy. Royal. Vintage Rose. And the natural, undyed, the color the terry is before we touch it.
Old Money Green and Vintage Rose are ours. We made those colors and they exist nowhere else.
The whole suit
It runs across the hoody, the crew, the sweatpants and the shorts, so you can take a color right through. The terry is 30 ounce and made in the USA. It is cut and sewn here in Seattle, with a vintage stitch throughout.
It is not cut oversized. It is a fitted design, which is how I wanted my own sweats. I wear a large. I have a set on more days than I probably should admit.
