If I could only keep one jacket for the rest of my life, it would be a chore coat. Not the flashiest thing I own. Just the one I would actually reach for every single day, in almost any weather, for almost any reason. There is a reason this shape has survived more than a century without really changing.
Born to work
The chore coat started as a working garment in France, the simplest possible answer to a simple question: what does someone who works with their hands need from a jacket? The answer turned out to be almost nothing. No lapels to get caught. No fussy closures. Just a straight, boxy cut you can move in, a plain collar, and pockets big enough to carry your tools and your day.
It was often dyed a deep blue, so it hid dirt and aged into something beautiful whether anyone intended that or not. Farmers wore it. Railway crews wore it. Painters wore it. It was the definition of an honest garment: nothing on it that did not earn its keep.
Then the artists took it
Here is the turn that makes the chore coat interesting. Because it was cheap, useful, and completely unpretentious, it got adopted by exactly the people who wanted nothing to do with fashion. Painters and sculptors and writers wore it in the studio because it held brushes and did not matter if it got ruined. And then, because those people looked so good in it, the fashion world came sniffing around.
That is the eternal life cycle: a garment gets designed purely for function, function makes it look right, and looking right makes it immortal. Nobody set out to make the chore coat cool. It just refused to be anything other than useful, and cool followed it home.

I dreamed about this jacket for years. The idea was simple and completely unreasonable: take the most useful shape ever made and build it out of the best cloth I could find on earth. So I went to the Outer Hebrides.
Our Ultimate Wool Chore Coat is built from golden Harris Tweed, one hundred percent pure virgin wool, woven by hand by islanders in their own homes in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, dyed and spun there too, because by law it cannot be made anywhere else. Then it is lined throughout in the finest Japanese diamond quilting, so the toughest wool in the world sits against something quietly luxurious. It is the most Black Bear Brand object I can imagine: a farm jacket, made of a cloth protected by an Act of Parliament, lined in Japan.
All our Harris Tweed is woven for us in limited production. When a run is gone, it is gone. There is a psychedelic blue tartan version of this obsession too, cut as a western jacket, if you want the loud one.

That is my real advice. The chore coat is the least trendy jacket you can buy, which is exactly why it will still be right in twenty years. It was built for people who needed it, not for people looking at it. Build one out of cloth that lasts, and it might be the last jacket you ever have to think about.
