Women and Corduroy: The Vintage Rose Boy Friend Cords Have Arrived

Corduroy is having a moment again — as it does, faithfully, every few years — but at Black Bear Brand we've never treated it as a trend. Cord is woven into our history. And this season it takes on something new: the first women's corduroy in Black Bear Brand history — the Vintage Rose Boy Friend Cords.

Before we get to that, it's worth knowing what you're actually wearing when you pull on a pair of cords. Because corduroy has one of the most fascinating backstories in all of textiles.

The "cloth of kings" — and the myth that won't die

You'll hear that "corduroy" comes from the French corde du roi, the "cord of the king," supposedly worn by servants in French royal households. It's a wonderful story. It's also almost certainly not true — historians have found no records to support it. The more likely origin is English: the word may descend from a coarse eighteenth-century cloth called duroy, or even from the surname Corderoy.

The fabric itself is far older than the name. Corduroy's ancestor is fustian, a tough, raised-nap cloth associated with the ancient Egyptian city of Fustat as far back as roughly 200 AD. Fustian traveled to Europe in the Middle Ages, lining the gowns and doublets of nobility. It was British textile makers in the eighteenth century who developed the distinctive ridged cloth we now call corduroy.

From "poor man's velvet" to counterculture cool

Corduroy has always crossed class lines, which is exactly why we love it. In the 1800s, as velvet claimed the aristocracy, cord picked up the nickname poor man's velvet and became the honest uniform of farmers, workers, schoolmasters, and artists. Then it kept getting cool: it soldiered through both World Wars, defined the tweedy academic of the mid-century, and roared back in the 1960s and '70s as the fabric of a rebellious generation — so much so that a British trade official once credited The Beatles with saving the country's corduroy industry.

One of the loveliest things about a great washed corduroy is the way it ages: the color softens and deepens with wear, so the piece becomes more yours over time — the same living quality we chase in our denim.

Black Bear Brand and corduroy

Corduroy is part of the original Black Bear Brand DNA. Alongside denim, wool jackets, and shirting, the historic Black Bear Manufacturing Company made corduroy pants — rugged, purpose-built, made for a life lived outdoors. When Josh Sirlin resurrected the brand, cord came back with it, and Black Bear Brand corduroy has been quietly celebrated by people who know good cloth ever since (see also Josh's Distressed Corduroy Short).

Vintage Rose is a Black Bear Brand original: a dusty, warm, sun-softened rose that looks like it's already lived a beautiful life — equally at home under a wax-canvas jacket or a cream knit. This is corduroy done the Black Bear Brand way: the right weight, the right hand, built to be worn hard and loved for years.
