Tokyo Style: A Field Guide to the World’s Best-Dressed City
I have spent a decade going back to Japan for design and production. Here is what the best-dressed city on earth taught me about getting dressed.
The city that takes clothes seriously
Walk any neighborhood in Tokyo and you notice it within a block. People here dress on purpose. Not loud, not for the camera. Considered. A man in his seventies in a perfectly worn chore jacket, moving through a train station like he owns it. A kid whose vintage denim is better than anything in most shops. Nobody is trying too hard, and somehow everybody is trying exactly enough. It is the most quietly stylish place I have ever set foot in.
Japan studied American style so closely that it ended up understanding it better than we did. There is a whole name and a whole history for that story, and I have written about it in the journal. But in Tokyo you do not read it. You feel it, on the street, on real people, every single day.
What the Japanese get right
Fit over flash. A plain shirt that fits beautifully beats a famous logo every single time here. It is not even close.
Fabric first. Ask a Tokyo shop owner about a garment and he will tell you the mill, the loom, and the weight before he ever mentions the price.
Age is a feature, not a flaw. Fades, patina, a jacket worn hard for fifteen years. They read wear as beauty. That is the exact philosophy behind the denim I make.
Restraint wins. One great piece, worn honestly, says more than a closet stuffed with trend.
From the mills of Okayama to a Tokyo backstreet
My Japan is not only Tokyo. It starts down in Okayama, at the mills where our selvedge denim and our corduroy are made, on slow looms and with real indigo, by people who treat cloth like a calling. Then it moves north to Tokyo, where I get tattooed, ride, eat too much, and just watch how the best-dressed city on earth actually lives.
That whole arc, from the mill to the street, is Black Bear Brand’s ten-year love affair with Japan in one line. It is why we opened Black Bear Brand Japan at blackbearbrand.jp, and it is why so much of what I make is made there and nowhere else.
Steal this
Buy less, buy better, wear it hard, and let it age. That is the entire Tokyo lesson in a single breath. It also happens to be exactly how we build everything at blackbearbrand.com. Funny how the two keep landing in the same place.
A Way Of Life.
