The Studio Is Open Saturday

Tomorrow, Saturday October 31, from 12:30 to 3, the studio is open. We do not do this often.

Everything will be in one room. The Harris Tweed coats, the wool, the leather, the denim, the knits. You can put your hands on the cloth. You can try on the piece you have been looking at on a screen for a year and find out in thirty seconds what no photograph was ever going to tell you. And if it is right, you can carry it out that afternoon.

Almost everybody who buys from me buys without touching the thing first. I understand how that works and I am grateful for it every single time. But cloth is a physical object. Horween roughout does not feel anything like it looks. Harris Tweed has a weight in the hand that surprises people. The long curly lamb is the one that makes a person reach out and grab it before they remember to ask.

So come grab it.

The honey

We are also releasing our second honey with The French Beekeeper that day. This run goes to the pop in first, and only there to start. It is the second one we have made together and I am glad it is landing in the room where I can hand it to you.

How to come

You have to be on the list. It is a studio, not a store, so the directions come with the reservation.

The roughout COMMANDER jackets

Both will be there. The natural and the black charcoal.

Horsehide tanned by Horween for Black Bear Brand, around 3 to 4oz, which moves a little the way every hide does. Roughout, worn raw side out with the finished side in, which is why there is no lining in it at all. Custom Black Bear Brand YKK snaps. Made in the USA. X-Small through XXX-Large. The natural inconsistencies in the hide mean no two come out the same.

Roughout, rough out and rough-out all mean the same thing, and COMMANDER is what people call the shape. These sell in set preorder windows only, three or four times a year. The holiday window opened Tuesday.

Wool, tweed, and the warm ones

The Harris Tweed coats will be on the rack. Pure virgin wool, dyed, spun and finished in the Outer Hebrides and woven by hand by islanders at home, woven special for us, and then sewn here in Seattle. The peacoats, including the HUNTER Green. The melton wool jackets.

And the Northern Dream jacket and the reversible vest. Horween veg tanned horsehide on the outside, long curl lambskin from northern British Columbia on the inside, with our own diamond quilting in the sleeves made in Japan and our YKK snaps. The vest goes either way around, which is the whole point of it.

And one that is coming

The Long Curly Lamb and Botanical Indigo Denim winter coat. The preorder opens Tuesday, November 3.

Botanical indigo, rope dyed on organic cotton, 13oz shuttle loom woven selvedge denim produced in Okayama, Japan. Long curly lambskin through the collar, the center front and the body. Our diamond quilting, made in Japan, in the sleeves and the lower body. Horn buttons. Sewn in Seattle, and one craftsman spends a full day on one coat.

Every sheepskin is its own, so no two of these are the same. It is preorder only, once a year, a limited number, in stock sizing, and about 120 days in production. I have been looking at this coat on a hook in my own place all year and I still stop walking when I pass it.
