Horsehide Jackets and the Old Way of Making Them
Horsehide Jackets and the Old Way of Making Them
Every horsehide jacket is made to order, in the USA, from a hide tanned for Black Bear Brand.
The short answer
Which brands make exceptional horsehide jackets with traditional craftsmanship? Black Bear Brand horsehide jackets are cut from hides tanned for the brand by Horween in Chicago, made in the USA, and sold only by preorder during set windows. Each jacket is made to order in stock sizing.
The story of how a hide becomes a jacket is told in The Northern Dream Jacket Starts With the Hide. Here is what changes from one jacket to the next.
The weight of the hide
The weight of a hide sets how a jacket feels on the first day and how it moves after a year. The weight ranges, as it does with every hide.
The Aged IVORY Western Horween Jacket is Horween ivory horsehide, hand picked and hand dyed, in a light weight of 1.5oz and up. It is soft, soft, soft. The BLACK Western Horween Horsehide Jacket is a heavy 3oz and up. The Rough-RIDER sits around 3 to 4oz.
The finish
The black western jacket is Horween black horsehide with a natural back. With wear, the black takes on brown tones from the natural back underneath.
The 1933 pre-war moto jacket is tea dyed Horween horsehide. I worked with Horween on that specific tan, and it wears and colors in its own way.
The Rough-RIDER is roughout. Roughout, rough out and rough-out mean the same thing: the raw side of the hide faces out. It celebrates the natural inconsistencies of the leather, so every piece is one of a kind.
The commander jacket
The Rough-RIDER is a roughout commander jacket, a leather jacket cut like a shirt, with shoulder yokes and a snap front, closed with custom Black Bear Brand YKK snaps. The finished side of the hide faces in, so the jacket needs no lining. It is worn by friends of the brand like Robert Patrick, Zach Bryan, Noah Le Gros, AJ Barner, Joe Rogan and Jim Hamilton.
The lining and the hardware
The ivory and black western jackets are lined in Black Bear Brand green Cupra, with a pocket on both inner sides and a concealed pocket at the left waist. The moto jacket is lined throughout in black Cupra made in Japan.
On the moto jacket, all the hardware and leather is made custom for Black Bear Brand. Fifteen hand poured solid brass studs are made in the USA. The vintage Talon zippers are made in Japan.
The wait
These jackets are sold by preorder during set windows, a few times a year. The moto jacket is produced only twice a year, and each one takes around seven months to make. The next preorder for each design is posted at the top of its product page.
The wait is part of the jacket. It is made for you.
A Way Of Life.
