This year I started my women's collection. Here is what it is made of.
New this year
Black Bear Brand has dressed men for a long time. This year I started my women's collection. It is called Black Bear Brand WOMAN, and the newness is the story.
Every piece was designed for a woman. The cloth comes from the finest mills. The sewing rooms are chosen for where each piece is made best. New pieces join the collection every month.
Where it started
For years I wanted to make something for a woman and it would not come. Then it did, all at once. The whole story is in The Woman Who Started It.
The jeans
The WOMAN Boy Friend Washed Jeans are 12oz shuttle loom woven selvedge denim, made in Okayama, Japan, the town the world knows for denim. The fit is relaxed and easy, a shape borrowed from him and made her own.
The wash is our BBBW wash, made only for WOMAN. Pink thread marks the signature places. The pocket bags are rose red and the leather patch is baby blue. It closes with a button fly.
The Vintage Rose corduroys
The WOMAN Vintage Rose Boy Friend Cords are 8oz washed corduroy, 100% cotton, made for Black Bear Brand in Japan.
Vintage Rose is a custom color. I create the dye color, the corduroy is made for us, and it exists nowhere else. Then every pair goes through the BBBW garment wash, which fades the rose and gives it depth. Each pair comes out its own.
The thread is pink, the leather patch is pink, the back pockets are our tear drop shape, and the fly buttons are our own YKK originals. Corduroy has been in this brand from the beginning. Now it is cut for her.
The rest of the collection
The WOMAN Wildflower Harris Tweed Chore Coat is our first Harris Tweed coat for women, woven by hand in the Outer Hebrides and made in Seattle. The WOMAN Japanese Cotton Thermal Henley is 8.6oz waffle knit made in Japan. The WOMAN Reversible Vest pairs Horween horsehide with long curl lambskin and is sewn one at a time in Seattle.
