What he rarely owns is a piece with a story he can tell at the table. A coat whose cloth was woven by hand on an island off the coast of Scotland. A wallet cut from a leather that takes months to tan. A thing made in numbers so limited he will not see it on another man.
That is the world of Black Bear Brand. I am the designer and owner of Black Bear Brand, an historic American brand I brought back thirteen years ago. The cloth comes from the finest mills. Each piece is sewn in the room where it can be made best. The clothes are meant to be kept and passed down.

Harris Tweed, woven by hand for Black Bear Brand
Harris Tweed is the only cloth in the world protected by its own Act of Parliament. It is woven by hand at the weaver's home in the Outer Hebrides, from pure virgin wool dyed and spun on the islands. Every length is inspected and stamped with the Orb before it leaves.
New Harris Tweeds are woven for Black Bear Brand every year, and the coats are made in Seattle. The SKY BLUE Tartan Zip Coat closes with a two way Talon zipper made in Japan and is lined throughout in Japanese diamond quilting. The GOLDEN Harris Tweed Chore Coat carries the COMMANDER tag at the inner neck. The Psychedelic BLUE Tartan Western Jacket has leather reinforced snaps and diamond quilting inside.
Each one is limited by the cloth itself. When the tweed is gone, the coat is gone.
Shell cordovan in his pocket
Shell cordovan comes from a dense layer beneath the hide on the rump of a horse. A horse gives very little of it, and the tanning takes months. The Horween tannery in Chicago has made it since Isidore Horween opened his doors in 1905.

The Rough-Out Vintage IVORY & Brass Horween Belt is more than 10oz of ivory rough-out on ivory Horween leather. Both are made in the USA. Both are in very limited stock.
Merino from northern Japan
The Cable Knit Fisherman Wool Sweater is a bulky, soft knit of Rocky Mountain merino, worsted spun at 5 gauge and knit in northern Japan to a Black Bear Brand cable design. The Wool Cable Knit Watch Cap is pure merino, crafted in northern Japan in ivory, burnt orange and black. A watch cap fits every head on the list.
When he deserves the rarest thing
The horsehide jackets are made to order. The horsehide is tanned for Black Bear Brand by Horween, and every one of these jackets is cut and sewn in the USA. A preorder window opens only three or four times a year. Between windows there is no way to buy one at all.
